Master of Science in Nursing - Application Process

Admission Requirements

The Faculty of Graduate Studies sets the minimum requirements for admission to all graduate programs at UBC. The School of Nursing invites applications from registered nurses with a minimum overall average of 76% at the third- and fourth-year levels, with a first class standing (80% or above) in 12 credits or more of nursing courses from a degree program that is academically equivalent to a UBC degree. International students should also check their country's specific requirements.

Successful candidates will be drawn from the top-ranked applicants each year. In order to be included among the top-ranked candidates, there must be clear evidence that the applicant is competent to pursue studies in the English language. Completion of a satisfactory TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), with a minimum score of 600, may be required before any offer of admission can be made.

In exceptional circumstances, registered nurses with relevant post-baccalaureate professional experience of an academic nature may be considered for admission on a "special case' basis.

In order to ensure that they have the preparation to be successful at the graduate level prior to consideration for full admission, graduates from programs not accredited by the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing (CASN), or programs in new universities or institutions that have recently become degree-granting, will be advised to take a limited number of graduate level courses as unclassified students. These courses may be accepted for transfer credit in the MSN program if the student is subsequently accepted.

Prospective applicants are invited to consult with the program advisor, Dr. Geertje Boschma about their eligibility for the program and the application process.
