Health and Safety
Hospital protocols take precedence over UBC procedures in Koerner Pavilion.
It is the responsibility of individual students and members of faculty and staff to:
- observe safety rules and procedures
established by supervisory staff, administrative heads of unit and
the University;
- be safety-conscious in all activities, be
they work, study or recreation;
- report as soon as possible any accident,
injury, unsafe condition, insecure condition or threats to
personal security to a supervisor or administrative head of unit;
- use properly and care for adequately
personal protective equipment provided by the University;
- participate, if elected or appointed, on departmental or building safety committees.
No member of the faculty, staff or student should be doing any activity if they
believe that the activity would create an undue hazard to themselves or to others.
Current regulations make it clear that all employees must be trained and have
relevant hazard information on the materials they are working or exposed to.
The following emergency numbers are for all hospital areas, including academic areas:

Note: Cell phones must not be used in the School of Nursing. Even on standby, cell phones can interfere with medical equipment in a hospital building.
There are phones available in the following areas for faculty, staff and students

T252 - Undergraduate Students Lounge
T295 - Graduate Students Lounge
Floor Maps
There is a floor map outlining the zones on the wall in each of the classrooms, by an exit on each pod, The Hub, the Main Office, the Work Room
First Aid
In case of minor cuts/abrasions you'll find first aid kits in the Work Room (T203), the Main Office (T201), LRC (T181). Otherwise, medical aid is available at the hospital Employee Health Unit (on the second floor) between 0800 hours and 1600 hours on weekdays. Medical aid is available at the Emergency Department outside of the Health Unit hours.
For an accident/injury requiring First Aid response, dial "2-7225" - Security. Identify yourself, the exact location and the nature of the injury. Remain at the scene until First Aid arrives. The designated First Aid Attendant will: proceed to accident scene on priority basis; administer first aid; arrange for suitable transportation.
All first aid treatment within our school, however minor is to be reported to our Department Safety Program Administrator (DSPA's):Mary Sun.
Campus First Aid is available to Faculty, staff and students while outside the hospital building on campus.
Campus Central Response System
The Vancouver Fire and Rescue Service provides first aid coverage for all employees on the UBC Main Campus 24 hours a day. Dialing 822-4444 will summon the Emergency Transport Vehicle and trained first aid attendants. The first aid attendants will:
- provide treatment
- transport a worker to the hospital upon request
- record each injury in the treatment books
- complete all necessary WCB forms that can be used to initiate a WCB claim.
First aid for injured students and visitors can be summoned by calling 911. Department employees are encouraged to use the 2-4444 number for first aid services; however, in any emergency situation, calling 911 is always appropriate. Workers will not be reprimanded for using 911.
For further information and details on all policies relating to Health and Safety see the UBC Safety Policy.
