Policies and Guidelines

Progression and Advancement

The Undergraduate Program Progressions Committees (Basic) meet at the end of each term and/or as necessary to review the academic progress of each student.

The minimum passing grade for nursing courses within the School is 60%. The minimum cumulative grade average to progress from one academic level in the program to the next is 65%.

Examinations
Supplemental examinations are not offered.

In clinical nursing courses, the student must have successfully completed clinical practice before being eligible to write the final examination.

Academic Standing
The Progressions Committee will assign an academic standing as follows:

Students in Good Standing

  • A minimum of 60% in each nursing course
  • An overall average of 65% or greater

Academic Probation
Occurs in any of the following cases:

  • A student has an overall average for the academic level between 60-65% with no failed courses
  • A student is repeating a failed course
  • A student who has been required to discontinue studies and later is readmitted (see Academic Regulations - Advancement Regulations in UBC Calendar).

Students on Academic Probation will be informed in writing that they must regain Good Standing in the subsequent term in order to continue in the Program.

Academic Failure
Results from any of the following:

  • A grade of less than 60% in a nursing course
  • An 'Unsatisfactory/Fail' Clinical Practice grade (See 'Unsatisfactory' Clinical Practice policy)

Program Failure

  • Students who do not achieve the minimum grade average for promotion will normally be required to discontinue study in the School of Nursing for at least one year.
  • Except in unusual cases, no student may repeat a course more than once. A student who fails a course for a second time, or fails two or more courses will be required to discontinue study in the School of Nursing for at least one year (see Academic Regulations – Advancement regulations in UBC Calendar.

Readmission
After a period of one year, a student may apply for readmission. Student readmission to the program will be decided by the Undergraduate Progressions Committee on the basis of a convincing case that the issues associated with the earlier Academic Failure have been resolved. Students who are permitted to return to the program will return on Academic Probation.

Misconduct
Students are also reminded that student misconduct/professional misconduct may result in requirement for withdrawal from the University and/or the School (See policy/guidelines regarding Misconduct/Professional Misconduct)

Although satisfactory academic performance is prerequisite to advancement, it is not the sole criterion in the consideration of the suitability of a student for promotion or graduation. The School of Nursing reserves the right to require a student to withdraw from the School if considered to be unsuited to proceed with the study or practice of nursing (see UBC Calendar: School of Nursing: Advancement).
