Policies and Guidelines

Gift Giving and Receiving

In keeping with the CRNBC’s Practice Standards on Conflict of Interest and Nurse-Client Relationships as well as UBC’s Policy on Conflict of Interest and Conflict of Commitment, School of Nursing faculty members are encouraged to be mindful of the potential for unmanageable conflict of interest or misuse of power when deciding whether or not to receive gifts from students or to engage in gift-giving in relation to any aspect of their professional role. When situations related to gift-giving arise, faculty are expected to exercise careful consideration and professional judgment, ensuring that they avoid any instance in which their responsibility to instruct and evaluate students in a fair, unbiased and effective manner is or appears to be impeded or compromised, or that their actions violate the boundaries of competent professional-client relations. Gift giving is not expected and indeed it is actively discouraged in the normal course of faculty-student interactions. However, the School accepts that there can be some instances in which potential conflicts of interest related to gift-giving can be appropriately managed.
