Applicants to the School of Nursing are advised that completion of Criminal Record Check (CRC) by the police is a requirement for placement at a number of agencies providing clinical learning experiences. The CRC is one way of protecting clients, especially those who may be vulnerable. Students may not refuse a clinical placement on the grounds that a criminal record check is required.
All undergraduate students are required to have a criminal record check completed after receipt of notification of acceptance for admission and prior to beginning the first clinical nursing experiences. Expenses for the CRC are the responsibility of the student. The consent for criminal record check and the procedure to follow will be provided during orientation to the School.
A criminal record does not necessarily preclude admission to the School of Nursing. Once in the Nursing program, students are required to inform the Director of any changes in their criminal record such as criminal charges or convictions.
Procedure
The CRC is completed as a part of the initial Student Membership process with CRNCBC
on admission. It may also be carried out by filling out forms and making an application
at your nearest RCMP detachment office.
Details about the procedure are available on the RCMP Website at: RCMP Criminal Record Check
The application process involves filling out forms and having your fingerprints recorded. A fee will be charged (no credit cards accepted). When asked for the Reason for the Criminal Record Check specify "student nurse" as the job title under the "Employment" category. It may take several weeks to process a Criminal Record Check, so do this well in advance of starting clinical courses.
Once the School of Nursing receives the CRC results, the student has met this requirement for clinical placements. The CRC results will be kept on file by the School and communicated to the clinical agencies as required.
