Writing Resources

University writing may be somewhat different from what you've done previously at school or work. Navigating the basics of writing, combined with the various forms of writing and assignments that are expected from you in your nursing courses can present many challenges. Follow the links on this page as a starting point to help you build your knowledge and skills related to academic writing.

Submission of Undergraduate Student Assignments

Students are responsible to make every effort to complete assignments on time. Assignment submissions are expected on the date determined by faculty. If extensions are necessary, they may be requested up to 48 hours prior to the assignment due date, and should be submitted in writing to the faculty member involved. In exceptional situations, extension requests within the 48 hour period may be considered.

Late papers will have 2% of total marks for the assignment deducted for each day/partial day (including weekend days) beyond the due time.

Example: If an assignment is worth 20 marks, the student will lose 0.4 marks for each day it is late. If the student would have received a grade of 16/20 and the paper is one day late, the student receives a grade of 16 - 0.4 = 15.6 marks; if 2 days late 16- 0.8 = 15.2 marks.

For essay style assignments (i.e. those requiring reference to published authorities), students are ordinarily required to submit an electronic copy and to upload assignments into the TurnItIn system. Students are responsible to comply with instructions in the course syllabus. The School will retain a copy of all assignments submitted in electronic format in the School for future reference. Electronic copies of assignments must be virus free prior to submission (students are responsible for ensuring that their virus protection is effective and current).

The standard format/style used for assignments in the School is the American Psychological Association [APA] format. Faculty will advise students in their course syllabi if there is a preference for another format/style.
