Financing Your Program

Opportunities for scholarship and other support are available from a variety of sources. Your supervisor will work closely with you in the preparation of all scholarship applications. These materials are complex and take considerable time to develop. We encourage you to plan accordingly.

Teaching or research graduate assistantships are available and may augment your education. Please contact the graduate advisor or your supervisor to learn about the availability of these opportunities. Many faculty members employ students and advertise through the Office for Nursing Research and Teaching Scholarship.

Scholarship and Fellowship Support

Opportunities for scholarship and other support are available, from a variety of sources. Additional information is provided on the Faculty of Graduate Studies website, including Four Year Doctoral Fellowships.

Several awards that recognize academic achievement are granted annually by the UBC School of Nursing to incoming and continuing PhD students. The School is grateful to the generous donors who make these awards available. These awards are administered by a graduate program scholarship committee and no application is required.

These applications are lengthy and seek information about your achievements to date and your research interests and career goals. Your graduate advisor and other members of the faculty will assist with the application process. Please note the deadlines and ensure that you plan well in advance.

The Graduate Student Initiative (GSI) is a University-wide program for funding graduate students. Details of this initiative and its components may be found on the Faculty of Graduate Studies website at www.grad.ubc.ca. The criteria employed by the School of Nursing faculty members for consideration of students for these competitive awards are as follows:

  • Students are eligible prior to entry or within their first two years of admission to a graduate program [for the current year, this is defined as two years as of May 15, 2009].
  • Scholarships and awards are merit-based.
  • Consideration of academic merit will be based on a minimum of 12 credits of coursework.
  • Eligible students will be those currently enrolled or entering a research-oriented program of study at the Master’s or doctoral level.

Students interested in learning more about these awards should direct their inquiries to the Graduate Advisor for the appropriate program.

The Registered Nurses Foundation of BC offers bursaries to doctoral students.

Student Housing

There are many housing options for PhD students. Major fellowship holders are guaranteed housing assignments to single student residences. Year-round housing for families with one or more children, or for couples, is also available. To find out which graduate awards are eligible for assured student housing, please contact UBC Housing and Conferences. The housing application process is entirely separate from the admissions process - please do not wait until you are admitted before applying for housing.

Graduate Student Representation

PhD students have representation on the School of Nursing Graduate Programs Policy Committee and the School of Nursing Faculty Caucus. If you are interested in serving in one of these roles, please discuss the opportunity with the PhD Graduate Advisor. Students are encouraged to get involved with the UBC Graduate Student Society.
