Preparation for practice as a professional nurse requires the integration of knowledge with the performance of specific skills to provide competent clinical care. Skills are placed within courses according to anticipated clinical activities. A major purpose of the Clinical Skills Lab is to facilitate the acquisition of nursing skills, using innovative, as well as traditional teaching and learning approaches.
The simulated clinical environment provides the context for practice so that students may be better prepared to deploy skills in the complex, real-world setting. Students are able to try out alternative means of problem solving in a safe, supportive environment. Through a variety of activities, emphasis is placed on mastering scientific principles that can be applied to a wide variety of situations and the opportunity to develop the critical thinking that is central to providing safe and effective nursing care.
