Honours and Distinctions
THORNE INDUCTED AS BC’s FIRST INTERNATIONAL FELLOW, AMERICAN ACADEMY OF NURSING
Dr. Sally Thorne has become the first BC nurse to be inducted as an International
Fellow into the American Academy of Nursing. In a ceremony in Washington DC on October
15, 2011, she was joined by four other Canadian nursing leaders in receiving the
honorific designation “FAAN.”
CLINICAL ASSISTANT PROFESSOR RECEIVES PERSONNEL AWARD
Martha Mackay, Clinical Assistant Professor, has been awarded the Heart and Stroke
Foundation of Canada Personnel Award, which provides salary support for Canada's
best young researchers – at universities, hospitals and institutes across Canada
and abroad (www.hsf.ca).
Martha has received a research scholarship for her work in cardiology at UBC, more
specifically, in those factors contributing to pre-hospital delay in Chinese Canadians
with acute coronary syndrome.
CAREER AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING HEALTH RESEARCHER
Assistant Professor, Jennifer Baumbusch, received the Michael Smith Foundation for
Health Research (MSFHR) 2011 Career Award for her work in improving the integration
of informal caregiving in long-term residential care. The overarching aim of Dr.
Baumbusch’s program of research is to contribute to more effective health care services
within long-term residential care (LTRC) by extending our understanding of informal
caregiving, that is, care provided by family and friends, within LTRC and translating
this knowledge by developing and refining policies and practices to improve the
integration of informal caregiving in LTRC.
